Week 19: New words

Day 1: New word: but, and, now

  • δέ
  • Pronounced like this: de (like in deaf with no “f”).
  • Sometimes the epsilon drops off and the accent turns into a smooth breathing mark when the following word begins with a vowel: δ᾽
  • This word is tricky because it is postpositive.
    • That means it will never be the first word in a sentence but will be the second word.
    • Βλἐπω δέ τόν ἂνθρωπον. = But I see the person.
    • Βλἐπω δ᾽ ἂνθρωπον. = But I see a person.
  • Usually this means “but,” but it can also mean “and” or “now.”

Day 2: New word: bread, loaf

  • ἂρτος, ὁ
  • Pronounced like this: ar (like in ark) - tos (os like in “positive”).

Day 3: New word: I wish, I will

  • θέλω
  • Pronounced like this: the (like in “theft”) - low.

Day 4: New word: I find

  • εὑρίσκω
  • It has a rough breathing mark, so add an “h” sound to the beginning.
  • Pronounced like this: heu (“eu” as in “feud”) - ris (as in “risk”) - ko (“k” with a long “o”).

Day 5: More about καί

  • You have already learned that this word means “and.”
  • When you see two of these it can mean “both . . . and . . .”
  • It can also mean “also” and “even.”
  • You will have to decide which meaning to use as you translate.
