- Paul, when he was known as Saul, witnessed the stoning of Stephen as described in Acts 7:59-8:1. Why did Paul not join in on the stone-throwing? Answer: Many New Testament scholars believe that Paul had bad eyesight. This comes from combining two verses. II Corinthians 12:7b states, “there was given me a thorn in the flesh.” So Paul had a physical problem. Galatians 6:11 states, “See what large letter I use as I write to you with my own hand!” So Paul’s problem may have been bad eyesight. Back to the stoning of Stephen. Paul was there, but did you really want to give a guy with bad eyesight some rocks and then tell him to start throwing them? So they said, “You just stand over there out of the way.”
- (Joke) Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is described in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but not in John. Instead, John describes the Footwashing event at the Last Supper. Why did John not include a description of Communion?
- (Remember that this is a joke) Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is described in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but not in John. Instead, John describes the Footwashing event at the Last Supper. Why did John not include a description of Communion? Answer: John 13:24 states that, at the Last Supper, the “disciple whom Jesus loved [John] was reclining next to him [Jesus].” While reclining against Jesus, John fell asleep. While he was asleep, Jesus passed the bread and wine, the first Communion. When John woke up, he asked what he had missed. The other Apostles, not understanding the significance, said, “Nothing much.”
- In II Corinthians, Paul lists different ways that he was persecuted: “Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned.” (II Corinthians 11:24, 25a) But he left out one. In another of his letters, he mentions a different persecution which he endured. What is the letter and what was the persecution? Hint, it happened in Ephesus, but it is not found in the book of Ephesians.
